African blog news

April 18, 2006

Long time favourite African blogger, The Zimbabwean Pundit, has moved to take over a new Zimbabwean megablog, Enough is Enough.

I’ll be checking in often.

  1. Hi Rob,

I’m also interested in Africa and participated for a time on the old Zimbabwe Independent discussion forum.

I think that if one wants to understand the reasons for Africa’s overall failure post independence, one can’t go past John Hollaway’s books, in particular All Poor Together and A great Deal of Nonsense.

There are some important lessons in these books for Aboriginal policy in Australia. For example, Hollaway stresses the essential role of private property in economic development. Communal land rights serve only to perpetuate poverty.

As I’m sure you’re aware, Anthony Daniels, writing under the pseudonym Theodore Dalrymple, has written a number of interesting articles on African affairs. If you haven’t already read it, this one, entitled After Empire in the Spring 2003 issue of City Journal, is bound to interest you.

Finally, to understand the nature of the people who took power in Zimbabwe in 1980, I recommend you get a copy of the report of the Special International Commission on the Assassination of Herbert Wiltshire Chitepo. It was serialised in 2001 in Zimbabwe’s Sunday newpaper, The Standard. (See a reference to it here.) Unfortunately, it’s no longer on the paper’s website and I can’t find it anywhere else on the web.
