On it goes

July 17, 2006

Hizbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah is acting more and more as if it is he who is the Prime Minister of Lebanon, entitled to make war-or-peace decisions on its behalf, as this post in From Beirut to the Beltway makes clear.

Lebanon and the world would do better to listen to the real PM, Fuad Saniora:

“We call for working to extend the state’s authority over all its territories in south Lebanon, in cooperation with the United Nations, and working to recover all Lebanese territories and exercising full sovereignty of the state over those territories,” Saniora said in a televised address to the nation.

His voice cracking with emotion, Saniora criticized Hezbollah without naming the group, saying Lebanon “cannot rise and get back on its feet if its government is the last to know.”

“The government alone has the legitimate right to decide on matters of peace and war because it represents the will of the Lebanese people,” he said.

Saniora called for the United Nations to intervene to stop bloody cross-border fighting between Israel and Hezbollah in south Lebanon.

“We call for an immediate and comprehensive cease-fire under United Nations auspices,” he said.

Meanwhile, over the weekend, Israel appears to have laid down its terms:

Jerusalem – Israel on Saturday laid out a set of demands to the Lebanese Shiite militia Hezbollah, which it said were its conditions for a ceasefire in Lebanon.

“Hezbollah must redeploy north of the Litani River. It must surrender its rocket arsenal to the Lebanese army, which must take up positions along the border with Israel,” Justice Minister Haim Ramon told Israeli television.

“If these conditions are met, Israel will agree to a ceasefire,” the minister said.

In other words, Israel is asking the Lebanese government to act like the government of Lebanon. On its face, a demand at once both reasonable and impossible of accomplishment.

Elsewhere: Lebanese blogger ZadigVoltaire at Beirut Notes has this to say about Nasrallah:

The only way I can face all the death and destruction around me right now is to be rude. And I am sorry.

“Kos Om Hezbollah Ala Om Israeel Ala Akht Souriya Ala Akht Iran.”

This little and fat bearded geek Nasrallah has decided to wage an open war on Israel. This little dogmatic #### is a slave to the coward Bashar Assad who is a slave to the little bearded and thin Ahmadinejad who is a slave to the biggest #### of them all Khamanei.

These criminals have decided to fight Israel to the last Lebanese. These criminals have decided to wipe out the future of our children.

The Israelis are killing our children and mothers and Nasrallah wants to fight on. Who is he to decide to fight on? Who gave him the right to fight on?

We, the Lebanese people, have elected a parliament and a government and they decide our future not some ignorant cleric.

But Nasrallah may still be winning on the street.
